AI will represent 10% of global IT spending by 2028: here's where to invest

| minute read

AI has accelerated dramatically since 2010, paving the way for the emergence of generative AI (GenAI) tools. These tools can absorb all the intellectual reasoning, scientific enquiry and human stories from our ancestors to the present day, and their growth momentum is unlikely to stop anytime soon. In fact, we predict that the AI market will grow three times faster than the overall tech market to reach 10% of global IT spending by 2028.

However, AI requires strong human leadership to ensure its potential is realised. With so many tools, providers and application use cases to choose from, it can be challenging for executives to identify where to focus. That’s why Sopra Steria has published a prospective report reimagining the contours of AI in business, with an innovative analytical model designed to help businesses shape their AI strategy responsibly, for long-term success.

Four AI archetypes to direct your focus and leverage performance

We've identified four main archetypes of AI use, segmented by business value rather than technological indicators, making it easier to optimise your investments and realise AI’s true potential for your organisation.

AI for Machine

Tools in this archetype perform the role of a 'digital twin' that can operate machinery, factories and entire supply chains ever more intelligently by connecting to the industrial metaverse. Examples include technologies used at Tesla, Siemens and Telit Cinterion. This market is expected to almost double by 2028, driven by the expansion of 5G/6G networks and the Internet of Things (IoT).

AI for Process

Using hyper-automation, these tools automate administrative activities via emerging intelligent process automation platforms, which aggregate various solutions. Popular platforms include SAP, ServiceNow and UiPath. We expect this market to more than double in the next four years, facilitated by advances in technologies like natural language processing (NLP).

AI for Human

Acting as a conversational agent, the AI for Human archetype consists of virtual assistant or decision support algorithms that support employees or clients with quicker answers. These include platforms such as Microsoft 365 Copilot, OpenAI and Google Duet AI. We forecast this market will triple in size in the next four years, thanks to NLP, Deep Learning and large language models (LLMs) that will create a new era of customer service.

AI for Software

The fourth archetype works as a coding assistant, which assists IT organisations in reaching the next level of automation across the IT development and run chain. GitHub Copilot, AWS CodeWhisperer and Jupyter all help specialists programme code and develop software.  This market is also expected to triple by 2028, with new technologies set to transform every area of IT.

Find out more about these four archetypes, how to bring your use cases from proof-of-concept to industrialisation and much more in our report: "Navigating the AI Era".
