Last summer, Cem Kalender rejoined the Sopra Steria Benelux team. After graduating in Data Science from the University of Utrecht, he first joined us in September 2022 with a strong drive for engineering. His path briefly led elsewhere, but new insights soon brought him back. Curious why? Read on.
From Young Professional to first steps in Data Engineering
Cem joined us as part of the Young Professionals programme. His background and enthusiasm for data made him a natural fit for Sopra Steria’s mission. Starting in the Data Migration Group, he showed his enthusiasm and willingness to learn right away.
The ‘SQL expert’
After a year, Cem got in touch with an old school friend, who casually mentioned his own team needed a “SQL engineer.” Cem hadn’t initially considered a change, but the role came with some benefits, and he decided to give it a try.
In his new role, he quickly gained the nickname “SQL expert.” Though he initially found the title flattering, Cem quickly realised it didn’t match his growth ambitions. “I’d only been working in data for a year, so I’m not a SQL expert yet.” Without the learning support Sopra Steria had provided, he soon felt limited and decided to return.
A place to grow and feel supported
Back at Sopra Steria, Cem feels fully supported, with access to certifications, training, and projects that fuel his growth. “The learning here is amazing; everyone gives you time and opportunity to grow,” he says, highlighting the team’s encouragement and trust.
Rediscovering his values
The time away gave Cem the space to reflect on what truly matters to him. “For me, it’s more about personal development; I now see the value in that above all,” he says. This experience not only shaped his career but deepened his self-awareness, helping him align his work with his personal values. Now, working with Rabobank, he feels his contributions are meaningful and values the alignment with his personal goals.
Advice for Young Professionals
Looking back, Cem has a piece of advice for other young professionals: “If you’re approached by a recruiter, ask yourself, ‘What do I need from an employer? Do they align with my values?’” His own journey highlights the importance of finding a workplace that supports your growth and matches your standards.
As he already settled back into the Sopra Steria team, Cem is excited to continue his journey, learning, growing, and sharing his passion for data engineering. Welcome back, Cem!
