To bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world healthcare challenges, the Expertise Centrum Extended Reality at Landstede collaborated with Sopra Steria to develop a state-of-the-art Virtual Reality (VR) training programme for nursing students. This innovative solution immerses students in a realistic virtual hospital setting, equipping them with critical skills in triage and clinical reasoning that would be difficult to replicate in a traditional classroom environment. Another part of this training takes place within a military ambulance, where students learn to make split-second decisions in highly stressful situations to save the life of a critically injured soldier.
The VR training, now an integral part of the nursing curriculum, allows students to experience high-pressure scenarios in a simulated field hospital, preparing them for situations they may face in demanding environments such as military or emergency care. Within the VR environment, students learn to assess and prioritise injuries, handle complex patient interactions, and apply their knowledge in a controlled but challenging setting.
“VR has now become indispensable in our healthcare training programmes,” says René Clausen, from the Expertise Centrum Extended Reality at Landstede. “This technology not only enhances the learning experience but also ensures that students enter the workforce with a level of preparedness that is truly invaluable.”
“We notice that VR training enormously increases the intrinsic motivation of our students,” says Hedy Siemerink, project coordinator at the Expertise Centrum Extended Reality at Landstede. “We want to lead the way in educational development. VR training gives us a huge digital advantage – thanks to Sopra Steria.”
The VR solution has been met with high engagement and positive feedback from students and instructors alike. By enabling nursing students to practise their skills in lifelike scenarios, this VR training enhances confidence and competence, ultimately contributing to better patient care and safety.
